Industry/Application: Aerospace - Gantry Crane Material Handling Equipment
Description: The equipment shown is an aerospace industry gantry crane for a material handling application. The equipment is used to move long composite parts from one location to another. This gantry crane system includes a large mechanical structure that is capable of X,Y,Z, and Roll motion.
The electrical and control system uses multiple Variable Frequency Drives (VFD’s) for the Bridge, Trolley, Hoist, and Roll axes. The VFD’s work in concert with a system Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) which allows interface with the equipment operator. The crane is controlled via a hand held wireless pendant. For safety, Flux Vector Drives were utilized for Z motion and the crane was fitted with end of travel, hoist overload, and hoist over-speed devices for operational safety purposes.
Our role in the project was to design and document the electrical and control system, fabricate the UL508A electrical panel, test the completed electrical and control system hardware, and to assist with final testing of the completed equipment.
